The band had its beginnings as a Bring and Play night school class at the Thorns Community College, Quarry Bank in 1998. The ‘class’ was run by a music teacher from the college and was offered as a free session to the local community. Public performances were limited to those at occasional college events.
In 2008 the music teacher stood down and other musicians led the band for a time. In 2009 another change of leadership took place and Bobby Johnson stepped into the breach. Bobby was a very experienced trombone player and band leader. He was the resident band leader at the Tower Ballroom, Edgbaston for 17 years. He also formed and led the BJ Youth Sound in Stourbridge in 1978. Under Bobby’s direction the band improved significantly and attracted additional quality players. The band called itself The Thorns Community Music Group at this time.

In 2011 the council decided it no longer wanted to continue offering this free session and the band became an independent organisation and relocated to Wordsley Church Hall. The group began to perform in public with its first concert at Coventry Guild Hall, the finest medieval guildhall in the country. Other concerts followed which included The Queens Jubilee Concert at Wordsley Church in 2012. Click here to watch "The Thunderer" from this concert conducted by Bobby Johnson. An appearance at Brierley Hill Civic Hall followed along with annual Christmas Concerts and many Summer concerts in Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge, Himley Hall grounds and Stevens Park.

The Covid pandemic of 2020 brought band activities to a halt for 18 months.
In September 2021, when rehearsals were able to resume, Steve Tromans returned as Musical Director. To mark the relaunch of the band and reflect the local area it served the band changed its name to The Kingswinford Concert Band.
